I am a long-term resident of Cape Cod, having moved from Waltham in 1996.
Alcohol and marijuana abuse affected me since I was 25. I am now 69. For years I kept my parents up at night worrying, feeling powerless, and afraid. I thought they were being dramatic.
I am not a parent of an addicted or struggling child. I was the child, adolescent, and adult of parents like you. I can share the insecurity and isolation your children are maybe dealing with. I work with it daily. Surprisingly, I found I am not alone. It seems to be the common thread we hide in secret from those we love, from all.
I am proud to say that in June I will be coming up on 3 years of continuous sobriety. When I was in the grips of my addiction, I did not realize the effect my addiction and my choices had on my parents and my loved ones. I was raised by good parents in a good family and in a good home and somewhere along the way I chose to go down the wrong path.
I now work in addiction treatment as an Outreach Coordinator and deal heavily with the parents of the clients. I also sit on the PCO Hope Board of Directors and the Bay State Board of Directors and it has been a really cool experience for me. I am super grateful for all these opportunities.
